Healthy Fast Food: What I Order at Chipotle, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A (Down 50 lbs)

Healthy fast food: cartoon of Brett comparing a Chipotle-style bowl and chicken soft tacos with a calories and protein checklist

With four kids in sports and school events, my family eats out two or three times a week. That didn’t change when I decided to lose weight, and it didn’t stop me from going from 265 to 215 pounds in 6 months. What changed was what I ordered.

So this isn’t a list of “healthy” items I’ve never tried. These are the exact orders I get at Chipotle, Taco Bell and Chick-fil-A, what I used to order, and the simple rules that let me eat healthy fast food without giving up the places my family loves.

Quick answer (updated October 2026): Healthy fast food isn’t about buzzwords. It’s an order that fits your calories, has plenty of protein, skips the sugary drink and gets decided before you walk in. My go-tos: a Chipotle barbacoa bowl (about 620 calories, 40 g protein), Chick-fil-A 8-count grilled nuggets with mac & cheese (about 580 calories, 45 g protein), and three chicken soft tacos at Taco Bell (about 480–630 calories, 36 g protein), all with a Diet Coke or water.

My Before-and-After Fast Food Orders

Here’s what I used to order compared with what I order now. Calories and protein for my current orders are approximate and come from each restaurant’s nutrition information (sources at the bottom).

RestaurantWhat I used to orderWhat I order nowAboutProtein
ChipotleChicken burritoBarbacoa bowl: white rice, pinto beans, light sour cream, light cheese620 cal~40 g
Taco BellBean burritos, Beefy 5-Layer Burritos, Doritos Locos Tacos and more3 chicken soft tacos + Diet Coke480–630 cal~36 g
Chick-fil-AChicken sandwich, large waffle fries, Dr Pepper and a vanilla milkshake8-count grilled nuggets + mac & cheese + Diet Coke580 cal45 g

My old Chick-fil-A order is the one that shocks people. The chicken sandwich (420 calories), large waffle fries (600) and vanilla milkshake (580) add up to about 1,600 calories before the Dr Pepper. My order now is about 580 calories, with more protein.

Chipotle: My Barbacoa Bowl

I get a barbacoa bowl with white rice, pinto beans, light sour cream and light cheese. Here’s roughly how it breaks down, using Chipotle’s full portions (I estimate “light” as about half):

  • Barbacoa: 170 calories, 24 g protein
  • White rice: 210 calories, 4 g protein
  • Pinto beans: 130 calories, 8 g protein
  • Light sour cream: about 55 calories (110 for a full scoop)
  • Light cheese: about 55 calories, 3 g protein (110 and 6 g for a full scoop)

That’s about 620 calories and 40 grams of protein. Some days I add fajita veggies (just 20 calories), and if my calories allow it, I get extra meat for about 170 more calories and 24 more grams of protein.

Why a bowl instead of my old burrito? The flour tortilla alone is 320 calories. A chicken burrito with just rice and beans already lands around 840 calories before any cheese, sour cream or chips.

Taco Bell: Three Chicken Soft Tacos

At Taco Bell I order three chicken soft tacos and a Diet Coke, and I get them just the way they come. Each one is roughly 160–210 calories and about 12 grams of protein, depending on whether your location has the classic Chicken Soft Taco or the newer Cantina Chicken Soft Taco. Three tacos come to about 480–630 calories and 36 grams of protein.

That’s a big change from my old Taco Bell runs, when I’d get a whole pile of bean burritos, Beefy 5-Layer Burritos and Doritos Locos Tacos. If you want to trim a little more, ordering “fresco style” swaps the cheese and sauce for pico de gallo. I don’t do that myself, but it’s an easy option.

Chick-fil-A: Grilled Nuggets and Mac & Cheese

My Chick-fil-A order is 8-count grilled nuggets, mac & cheese and a Diet Coke:

  • 8-count grilled nuggets: 130 calories, 25 g protein
  • Mac & cheese (medium): 450 calories, 20 g protein

That’s about 580 calories and 45 grams of protein. Yes, the mac & cheese is most of the calories, and that’s fine. I like it, it has protein, and it fits my day. If you want to cut back, a small mac & cheese is 270 calories.

How I Plan Eating Out With 4 Kids

  • I decide my order before I get there and stick to it. No reading the menu board hungry.
  • I order the same thing every time. I tracked these meals in Cronometer when I first started. Now I just order the same thing religiously, so there’s no guessing.
  • I plan the rest of the day around it. On days I know I can’t eat at home, I skip breakfast and stick to black coffee and water until later in the day.

Intermittent fasting works for me on busy days, but it isn’t for everyone. If you have diabetes, take medication that affects blood sugar, are pregnant or have a history of disordered eating, talk with your doctor first.

The Biggest Mistake: Falling for Buzzwords

The biggest mistake I see is not understanding what’s actually healthy and giving in to buzzwords like “low-fat,” “high protein” or “healthy.” Those labels don’t tell you how many calories you’re eating. A “healthy” salad with crispy chicken and a creamy dressing can easily beat a burger.

Instead of trusting the label, look at two numbers: calories and protein. Most chains post both online, and checking them takes a minute.

Why I Don’t Do Low Carb (or Off-Limits Foods)

I don’t like the “low carb” trend or telling people they can’t enjoy certain foods. My Chipotle bowl has rice and beans, and my Chick-fil-A order has mac & cheese. For me it’s all about moderation and protein. If you can do a little math, you can still enjoy what you like.

Start by finding your daily target with my free calorie calculator, then see how calorie deficit and macros fit together. For more on why I lean on protein, read protein for weight loss. And if soda is your weak spot, here’s why Dr Pepper was my first cut.

Healthy Fast Food FAQ

What is the healthiest fast food to eat?

The healthiest fast food is an order that fits your calorie target and has plenty of protein. Grilled chicken, bowls and simple tacos make that easy. Skip the sugary drinks and oversized sides, and check calories and protein instead of trusting words like “healthy.”

Can you eat fast food and still lose weight?

Yes. My family eats out two or three times a week, and I still lost 50 pounds. Pick an order that fits your calories, decide it before you go, and stick with it.

What is a healthy Chipotle order for weight loss?

A bowl instead of a burrito saves the 320-calorie tortilla. My barbacoa bowl with white rice, pinto beans, light sour cream and light cheese is about 620 calories and 40 grams of protein.

What should I order at Chick-fil-A to lose weight?

Grilled nuggets are a great base: 130 calories and 25 grams of protein for an 8-count. I add mac & cheese and a Diet Coke for about 580 calories total.

Is Taco Bell good for weight loss?

It can be. Three chicken soft tacos come to about 480–630 calories and 36 grams of protein. The calories add up fast when you order several burritos and specialty tacos at once.

Final Thoughts

You don’t have to give up fast food to lose weight. My advice is simple: make sure you don’t overeat, and ask me if you need help with options. Leave a comment with the restaurant you eat at most, and I’ll tell you what I’d order.
