Weight Loss for Busy Dads: Where to Start (From a Dad of 4)

Weight loss for busy dads doesn’t have to be complicated. I’m Brett, a dad of four who works two jobs. I’m a teacher, so I sit for about half my workday. I went from 265 to 215 pounds in 6 months, and none of it happened in a gym. My workouts happen after school and on weekends, usually in my driveway or living room.

If you’re a busy dad looking for a simple way to start losing weight, this page pulls together everything on Me-Fitter that worked for me, in the order I’d do it again.

Quick answer: Start with three things: track what you eat for a few days, cut back on snacking and soda, and walk every day. Once walking feels easy, add a light weighted vest and a short bodyweight circuit a few days a week.

Step 1: Know What You’re Eating

The first thing I tell every dad is to find out what you’re actually eating. I tracked everything, first in MyFitnessPal and then in Cronometer, and I weighed my food on a kitchen scale. It showed me how much I was really overeating.

Step 2: Cut Back on Snacking and Soda

Snacking was my biggest change. I used to snack on chips, candy, ice cream, donuts, cookies and soda. Dr Pepper was the first thing I cut. Now I reach for things like Smart Pop popcorn, pretzels, yogurt and protein bars.

Step 3: Walk Every Day

Walking was the backbone of how I lost the weight. I aim for 8,000 to 12,000 steps a day.

Step 4: Add a Weighted Vest and a Short Circuit

Once walking felt easy, I added a vest. Three days a week I walk in my 12-lb ZELUS vest, then do a quick bodyweight circuit in the driveway. I started light and worked up slowly, and when my knees got sore I lowered the weight and walked without the vest on my off days.

Step 5: Don’t Ignore Sleep

Fixing my sleep was part of it too. When you’re short on sleep, everything else gets harder. Here’s how fixing my sleep helped me lose weight.
